Is There a Weatherproof Boot for the Back of the Buyers Products 2-Way Trailer Connector?

Question:

I need to install a high amperage 40A or so connector at the back bumper of my truck to supply power to my trailer DC-DC converter while towing. The 2 pole connectors from Buyers Products or Pollack look to be appropriate but I am concerned with the weather protection of truck side connector wiring. This will live in a very wet and dirty location. Is there a boot or other protection scheme for the posts where truck wiring is attached to the connector?

Hello Joseph,

That is a great question, especially for a connector that is going to live underneath the back of your truck.

At this time, I'm not aware of a weatherproof boot or cover that is designed to fit over the rear terminals of the Buyers Products 2-Way Die-Cast Zinc Trailer Connector - Truck Side - Vertical Pin Arrangement # 337TC1012. The connector does have a spring-loaded dust cover to protect the front when it's not in use, but there isn't a matching boot available for the back side where the wiring attaches.

What I would recommend is assembling the wiring as normal, then applying a light coating of dielectric grease like # 11755 to the terminal connections before tightening everything down. Once the connections are complete, you can brush on Liquid Electrical Tape # SWC50122. It dries into a flexible, weather-resistant coating that helps seal out moisture, road salt, dirt, and other contaminants, making it a great option for a connector that will be exposed to the elements.

I have a victron 12/12-18 dcdc charger that charges a 300 Ahr LiFePO4 bank. 6 AWG marine grade duplex from battery to rear bumper, Marinco Connectpro troller motor socket at bumper (40A max), plug and 8 AWG wire to DCDC charger in trailer (about 5ft). Discovered plug gets quite hot when charging depleted batteries, not so much if batteries are full to start. Maybe I just need to clean terminals but perhaps there is a better connection setup that i should consider. Thanks for your suggestions.

@JosephO Thanks for getting back to me with your setup. It sounds like you've put together a really nice charging system. I don't see anything that jumps out as a concern with the 6 AWG marine-grade cable or the Victron 12/12-18 charger. The Marinco ConnectPro connector is also a solid choice for a 40-amp application. Since you're only seeing the charging rate drop when the batteries are heavily discharged, I would start by cleaning and inspecting all of the terminal connections. Even a small amount of corrosion or resistance at one connection can create enough voltage drop to affect charging performance under higher current loads. If everything looks clean and tight, I'd also check the voltage at the truck-side connector and then again at the input to the DC-DC charger while it's charging a depleted battery. That will help determine if you're losing voltage through the connector or somewhere else in the wiring. I don't think there's a better connector that would make a noticeable improvement over the Marinco. I'd focus on making sure every connection is clean, tight, and well protected from the elements. Let me know what you find after you get everything cleaned up and checked over. If you're still seeing the charging rate drop, I'd be happy to help you do a little more troubleshooting to figure out where the voltage loss is occurring.
