Hi Nychollas,
I completely understand your concern, especially if you've already had one rust out. The good news is that the Surco Rear Door Spare Tire Carrier, Part # SU29AR, is finished with a durable fine texture powder coat that's designed to resist corrosion, UV fading, and everyday road wear. It's also made here in the USA and backed by a 1 year limited warranty.
One thing I always recommend during installation is taking a couple of extra steps to help it last even longer. Since the carrier requires drilling through the rear door, it's a good idea to coat the exposed metal around the drilled hole with automotive touch up paint or a rust inhibitor before installing the hardware. That helps seal out moisture and prevent rust from starting.
With those extra precautions during installation, you can go a long way toward preventing the kind of rust issues you've dealt with before. Is this going on a Ford Transit, or are you mounting it to a different van?
