Hey Allan,

Thanks for your question. The 635096 part number you provided cross-references to a Dexter 4,400-lb axle.

For that axle, the correct replacement brake assemblies are:

Part # K23-478-479 if you'd like self-adjusting brakes
Part # K23-462-463-00 if you prefer manual-adjust brakes

I'd recommend going with the self-adjusting assemblies. They're actually less expensive than the manual-adjust version, and they automatically maintain proper brake adjustment, which means less maintenance and more consistent braking performance over time.

If you also need new mounting hardware, the Brake Mounting Hardware Kit # BRKH10A is the correct option.

Each brake assembly set and hardware kit services one axle, so if you're replacing the brakes on both axles, you'll need two brake assembly kits and two mounting hardware kits.

If you're already servicing the brakes, it's also a great time to inspect the bearings, races, and grease seals. If you'd like help identifying those components, just let me know.

Have any trips planned this summer after you complete your maintenance?

The hardest part of replacement was removing the 4 bolts that hold the backing plate. My trailer was old, yours would be less rusty. Also prepare yourself for the electrical connection, wire stripping and connection. The messy part is greasing the bearings during brake replacement. You can do it!!

@RichM Great feedback. Needing to replace the mounting hardware is not something most folks think about but is needed at times. The maintenance can be messy but I think it's definitely worth tackling yourself.
