I would first start off by making sure that all of the appropriate relays are in place. The turn signal and brake light relays will be in the fuse box under the hood of your 2006 Nissan Xterra. You can check the owner's manual or the legend on the panel to see their location in the box and see if they are in place and are not bad. You will also want to check the jumper harness that should be located on the passenger side floorboard behind the kick panel to make sure that it is securely connected. I am including the installation instructions to our Nissan 7-Way Tow Package Wiring Harness with Relays, # 118266, which will illustrate these steps.
If everything is correct and you still have no trailer lights, I would use a circuit tester like part #PTW2993 to check the functioning of the 7-way on your Xterra. I have attached a diagram to show the function of each pin.
If everything is performing like it should on the vehicle's 7-way, I would move on to checking the trailer and starting with it's 7-way connector. You will want to make sure that the connector is free of corrosion, moisture, or dirt. Next I would check to make sure that the ground is secure and that all other wires are free of damage.
I have attached a couple of articles that may be of help to you.
