Can A B&W Biker Bar Be Mounted Directly To A Truck Bed?

Question:

The biker bar tie down. I am thinking of directly attacking it to the bed of my truck. Any thoughts or advice on that? Thanks

Hey Steve, thanks for reaching out. The B&W Biker Bar Motorcycle Tie-Down Systems # BWMC2302 are more designed for trailers with a flat mounting surface, but they can be installed in truck beds as well. The main thing to keep in mind here is the corrugated sheet metal in a truck bed on its own is not a secure enough mounting surface for a biker bar.

In order to safely mount one in a truck bed, you'll need to add some kind of reinforcement to the bed. The best way to do this is to have a steel plate welded to the trucks frame under the bed. Then the biker bar could mount to that. That would of course require additional hardware that is not included with the kit.

I've also heard of people installing biker bars in their bed using only 3/4" plywood on top of the bed as a way to evenly distribute the load and reinforce the bed. This doesn't seem super secure to me though and honestly sounds kind of sketchy. I'd recommend going with a steel welded plate over plywood, but both options are on the table depending on what you're comfortable with.

What kind of bike and truck do you have?

I purchase this biker bar last year. I like the idea of driving my 07 Heritage up the ramp and into the biker bar and done. Get off the bike. But that’s not the case. I have to drive up the ramp of my toy hauler, stop short of the biker bar base, get off my bike and install the bar on the bottom of my frame then back on the bike and drive through the biker bar base and it locks in good. That part is pretty easy. Getting it back out is a little more difficult. It’s a real struggle doing it yourself. Releasing the 2 latches at the same time is a challenge even with an extra person releasing 1 side. After you back it out a couple of feet, you have to get back off your bike and take the bar off or it will hit the floor. I probably wouldn’t have purchased it if I know it was going to be this much trouble. It does hold it tight in place. Very sturdy.

@DanielG Thanks for taking the time to share your experience, Daniel. I'm glad to hear the Biker Bar holds your bike securely and that you're happy with how sturdy it is. I appreciate you pointing out the challenges with loading and unloading, especially when doing it by yourself. I'm sure that feedback will be helpful for others considering this setup.
