Brake Controller for 2022 Ford Ranger

Updated 07/06/2026 | Published 06/27/2026

Question:

Hi there, I have a 2022 Ford Ranger, with factory tow package, and I’m looking to add a brake controller. I really like the low-profile look, and apparent functionality of the Redarc line. I was hoping to get the Redarc Tow Pro Elite, but your website tells me it’s not a fit for my 2022 Ranger, but the Tow Pro Liberty is a fit. I wanted the Elite as my understanding is that it has a “Manual” mode where I can apply the trailer brakes independently from the truck, should I feel the need. Any clarification and insight you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thank you kindly, Barry

Hi Barry,

Thanks for reaching out!

The Redarc Tow-Pro Elite Brake Controller - Dash Knob - Off-Road Mode - Up to 3 Axles - Proportional (#RED44FR) will absolutely work with your 2022 Ford Ranger equipped with the factory tow package. I apologize for the fitment confusion on our website.

I completely agree with your thoughts on the Redarc brake controllers. We recommend them all the time because they offer exceptional performance while maintaining a clean, factory-style appearance. They're an outstanding choice.

As for the installation, it appears your Ranger does not have a factory brake controller connector under the dash, so the controller will need to be hardwired. I've included an installation video we made on a 2019 Ford Ranger that shows exactly where to locate the correct factory wires and how to connect them to the universal wiring harness included with the Tow-Pro Elite.

You'll also need two different sizes of butt connectors since the factory wiring uses two different wire gauges. I've included links to the connectors I recommend for the installation.

You also mentioned "manual" mode, and I believe you're referring to the Tow-Pro Elite's Off-Road Mode. This feature is exclusive to the Elite model and is not available on the Tow-Pro Liberty. Off-Road Mode allows the controller to apply your trailer's brakes with a preset amount of braking force, independent of what your tow vehicle is doing, making it especially useful in off-road conditions.

If you're looking at the Elite, it sounds like you have some exciting towing plans. Do you have any adventures coming up?

My 2020 Ranger STX did not have the factory tow package. I had to install all the wiring I used the GM knob that E tailer offers and installed it in the left center power plug. That makes it easy to see and reach to adjust. I have never had to use the manual mode while driving but have used it while testing the brakes here at home. The factory installed wires that are shown in the E trailer video were not in my truck and had to be installed.
