Dexter 7,000 lb Trailer Brakes - Self-Adjuster Not Touching Star Wheel
Updated 06/30/2026 | Published 06/25/2026 >
Question:
I have Dexter 7000 axle with 12 inch self adjust brakes. Both left side adjuster works fine, both right side adjuster levers that turn the star adjuster are positioned to far down and do not touch the adjuster star wheel. Is there a right and left adjuster lever, wrong on installed? I have a couple pictures if that would help. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dan 832-948-4084.

Hey, that definitely doesn't sound normal. There are left-hand and right-hand self-adjuster parts, so if the wrong adjuster lever was installed on the right side, it could definitely end up sitting too low to ever engage the star wheel. The fact that both left-side brakes are working correctly and both right-side brakes have the same issue makes me think something was assembled wrong rather than having two separate bad parts.
If it were mine, I'd pull one of the left drums and compare it side-by-side with one of the right assemblies. The adjuster lever should be riding against the star wheel, not hanging below it. I'd be checking to make sure the right-hand adjuster lever and star wheel are the correct parts and that the adjuster screw assemblies didn't get swapped from side to side during assembly. Since both right sides are doing the exact same thing, I'd be looking for an installation or assembly issue first.
Are the brakes original to the trailer? Have they ever been worked on or replaced?

Brakes are original, first time I pulled hubs to service bearings. You say there are left and right adjuster parts ( actuator lever and star adjuster?). If so, part numbers please so I can replace the incorrect parts. Thanks, Dan
