Automatic Sliding Fifth Wheel Hitch Recommendation to Get Better Turning Clearance

Updated 06/24/2026 | Published 06/22/2026

Question:

I have a 05 jayco designer 36 ft with a 7910 pin box with a Mor/ryd Rpb72-7910 on it and pulling with 2012 Dodge Ram 3500 dually mega cab. Pulled it for the first time last week and would like to get some options on getting some more turning clearance. I currently have a Demco model 6169 5th wheel hitch, don’t know if they make a Reese swinger that would work or would be willing to go with a gooseneck if that would work

Hey Jim, the Demco part number 6169 that you mentioned references a Demco Recon fifth wheel hitch head which means you have a fixed hitch. Since there aren't Sidewinders still made and you couldn't use a Sidewinder with a Recon anyway your best option is a sliding fifth wheel hitch to gain the turning clearance you are looking for. There isn't a gooseneck adapter that provides turning clearance either by the way.

For a slider hitch the Demco Hijacker Autoslide # DM8550034 would a great option that will feel familiar as it has same jaw design as what you have now except it slides back automatically as you make tight turns to give you the additional clearance.
