Recommended Suspension Enhancement For 2017 Toyota Tacoma Towing Casita Travel Trailer

Published 06/17/2026

Question:

I have a 2017 Tacoma Sport double cab. I’m towing 17’ Casita travel trailer, tongue weight around 3500 lbs. Gear and 2 adults in truck around 500 lbs. I use a weight distribution hitch but truck suspension bottoms out when hitting large dips like coming off bridges on I95. I tried Sumo springs but couldn’t stand the harsh ride when empty. What do you recommend?

Hey Patrick, welcome back! Since you think the SumoSprings are too harsh unloaded I recommend switching to Firestone air bags. You can run these at the minimum 5 psi when you aren't towing so they won't impact ride quality, then air them up when you're towing or hauling for that extra support.

The correct kit depends on your 2017 Tacoma. If you have a 4WD model with the axle below the leaf spring pack, or 2WD Pre-Runner, you need the # F2407. If you have a 2WD with the axle sitting above the leaf spring pack you need # F2410 instead. I also recommend adding an air compressor like the Firestone Air Command # F2610 so you can adjust the air bags from the cab wherever you go.

Any big trips coming up with the Casita?
