Why is there a 5 Second Delay to Apply the Brakes Using Hydrastar Actuator with Ford Adapter?

Updated 06/17/2026 | Published 06/16/2026

Question:

I purchased the HS 382-9066 and the HBA-CAM for my boat trailer and 2023 Chevy Silverado truck. When towing the boat there is still a 5 or so second delay where the actuator engages the trailer brakes. There is no air in the lines as I’ve bled the system several times. It’s putting a lot of extra wear on my truck. Is there something that can be done to adjust the response time of the hydraulic pump ?

Hello Alex,

A delay of 5 seconds before the trailer brakes engage is definitely not normal for the Hydrastar # HS381-9067 and BrakeRite Adapter Module # HBA-CAM. Under normal operation, the actuator should begin applying the trailer brakes almost immediately when the brake pedal is applied.

There is no adjustment available to change the response time of the hydraulic actuator or increase how quickly the pump activates. Since you've already bled the hydraulic lines multiple times, I would focus on the electrical side of the system.

The first thing I would check is that the BrakeRite Adapter Module # HBA-CAM is installed correctly and receiving a clean brake signal from your 2023 Silverado. The adapter is designed to allow the factory integrated brake controller to communicate properly with the electric-over-hydraulic actuator. If there is a wiring issue, poor ground, weak power connection, or a problem with the adapter module itself, it could cause delayed brake activation.

I would also verify that the truck's integrated brake controller is set for Electric Over Hydraulic (EOH) braking, if that option is available in the trailer brake settings menu. An incorrect brake type setting can affect brake performance and response.

Does this happen every time you brake? Can you send respond directly to the email you receive with pictures of your install? I would like to forward all this information to Hydrastar to get the opinion as well.
