Minn Kota Charger Causing Breaker Trips - Is A Soft Start the Answer?

Updated 06/17/2026 | Published 06/15/2026

Question:

Hi. I have a boat with 2 chargers, a Minn Kota 4 bank and a Dolphin 3 bank charger. Their amps are not too high. At the shore power pedestal, the 30 amp breaker does not trip. However, the inside breaker frequently trips especially with the Minn Kota charger. WHen I reset the breaker, it is fine. I think it is inrush current. Would this work? Is it marine grade?

Hey Ben, thanks for reaching out, and good question. I wouldn't jump straight to the Active Controls ActiveStart Plug-In Soft Start for Boats # AS47FR just yet. It could be an inrush current issue, but battery chargers generally don't have the same kind of startup surge that an air conditioner or compressor does. The thing that catches my attention is that the shore pedestal's 30-amp breaker never trips, but the breaker inside the boat does. That usually points toward something on the boat side of the system rather than a shore power capacity problem.

The # AS47FR is designed for marine use and it may help if you're getting a brief startup spike when the chargers first kick on. That said, I'd want to rule out a weak breaker first, especially if it's an older boat. I've seen plenty of marine breakers get a little trigger-happy with age and nuisance trip during startup, then run perfectly fine after being reset. The fact that you can reset it and everything works normally afterward makes me wonder if the breaker itself is part of the problem.

Before spending the money on a soft start, I'd check what type of breaker is tripping and whether it happens instantly when you plug in or after the chargers have been running for a bit. That'll help you narrow down if the breaker is the issue and if you would benefit from the soft start.

Hi It is not the boat breaker that trips. It is the building breaker that powers the shore breaker.

@BenG Ok gotcha. That changes things quite a bit. If the building breaker feeding the shore power outlet is what's tripping, and the 30-amp pedestal breaker isn't, then I'd actually be more suspicious of a startup surge or a weak upstream breaker. In that case, the # AS47FR makes a lot more sense and should resolve that issue.

@JesseM hopefully last questions. I use an extension cord. So does the lock part (top of Active Start) go to the shore power with a twist connection, then I lift up the white spring lid on the bottom of the Active start and plug in the short dogbone yellow cord and then the back/white part (4th to the last picture when expands) is how it connects to a normal 3 prong extension cord? I don't understand the 5th to the last photo that says "Active Controls? which I think is the back part of the regular 3 prong adapter or how that hooks up. Can you send a picture of the whole thing put together and how it connects to an extension cord? Or do I plug in the same adapter I have now from shore power to an AC extension cord? And will it be waterproof enough If it goes straight into the part hanging down as it might be at the bottom of the shore power cover? And is there a return policy if it does not work?

@Beng Sounds like you're understanding it correctly. The twist-lock end of the ActiveStart plugs into the boat's shore power inlet, just like your current shore power cord would. Then the covered receptacle on the ActiveStart is where you plug in your shore power cord or dogbone adapter. After that, everything upstream stays the same as it is now. How long of a cord are you using? I ask because if you're running a long 15-amp or 20-amp extension cord to feed two onboard chargers, you may be dealing with voltage drop in addition to startup surge. That's something the ActiveStart won't fix. If the extension cord is undersized or fairly long, the chargers can draw higher current during startup and make an upstream breaker more likely to trip. As for weather resistance, the ActiveStart is intended for marine use and outdoor installation, but I still wouldn't want the connection hanging where water can sit in it. Also, yes we can accept returns within 60 days of the order but only on unused products. If it's been used, we can't take it back.
