Are The Blue SumoSprings Less Harsh Than The Black SumoSprings?

Updated 06/15/2026 | Published 06/13/2026

Question:

I installed the black sumo springs to my 2024 Ford E450 class c motorhome a year ago. I do not like the harsh ride they provide when driving over bumps, road seams etc. I have subsequently had a roadmaster antisway bar installed on the front photo is before the anti sway bar was installed, which has provided good stability in cross winds. I am considering cutting down the black springs by removing one rib from each sumo spring. As you can see in the photo, the spring does contact the axle when the rig is unloaded. Alternatively, would the blue sumos be a better option? Would they also contact the axle when the rig is unloaded? Would they be a less harsh ride? Thanks.

Welcome back Gary!

The blue SumoSprings Solo Custom Helper Springs - Front Axle # SSF-106-40 are rated to half of what the black ones got are (so 500 pounds of capacity), so they will definitely be softer. That said, they are the exact same size and will be on the axle when unloaded, just like your current set up.

People do cut down SumoSprings on a fairly regular basis, but it's not what I would do. I think it would be better to go with the lighter duty # SSF-106-40. Especially if the black ones are currently way too harsh of a ride.

Where all have you taken your camper so far?
