Recommended Safety Cables and Attachment Point Guidance for Blue Ox Off-Road Bumper Adapters

Updated 06/17/2026 | Published 06/12/2026

Question:

I have a blue Ox tow bar I used to pully my 04 wrangler using a base plate. I know have a 2014 wrangler unlimited, it has the after market bumper wit D rings. My question is that in all the examples I have seen I do not see where people are connecting the safety cables with the aftermarket bumper and D ring setup. It seems the D ring location is often to far towards the outside edge of the bumper. So does that mean I can add more D Rings loser in towards the center of the bumper? this would make the safety cables inside of the tow arms? is that correct? If not where do you attach the safety cables? are people nit using them with the aftermarket bumpers? Thx Just want to be safe

Hey Terry, thanks for all of the information! If your aftermarket bumper doesn't have special loops designed for safety chains, you should attach your safety cables directly to the Jeep’s frame rails.

You will definitely want to use safety cables along with the Blue Ox Off-Road Bumper Adapters for Blue Ox Motorhome Mounted Tow Bars item # BX88357.

One way to connect to the frame using cables like item # BX88196 that come with Blue Ox tow bars, is to add extensions item # RM-910648-20. These are 20" long.

What aftermarket bumper do you have installed on your Jeep?

You can add this information, along with any other questions you have, where it says Add Comment.

I attach my 2010 JK safety cables (crossed) under the tow bar and attach to the frame mounted front anti swat bar via heavy duty D rings (like those often attached to off road bumpers). Works great in my configuration. My coiled steel safety cables easily stretch from the RV receiver, criss-crossed, under the tow bar, outside of my steel bumper and up to the D-Rings attached to the front swaybar. The cables in no way touch my bumper or anything other than the D-Rings I hook them to. The shape of your bumper may prevent this kind of a solution. BTW mine is a proven working solution as our jeep broke loose on one side as a result of a faulty bumper/winch plate weld. Jeep behaved as expected with zero damage done.

Terry, I have a 1995 Wrangler YJ with an aftermarket front bumper with D rings. I purchased Blue OX safety cables #BX88208. They are 3' long. I wrapped each one around the crossover frame tube on either side of the winch plate and connected them in front of the bumper with the quick links. They are positioned just inside the D rings. I connect the safety cables from the RV to the quick links. Works great

@MarkR Thanks for the tip Terry! The Blue Ox 3' Permanent Base Plate Safety Cables item # BX88208 are definitely great for that as well.

I added rings for the safety chains under my bumper . My bumper is a Fab Flex and they don’t rate their bumpers but they said a lot of their customers pull them with flat tow. I pull it all the time and my bumper and Jeep are still here. lol I have a picture but I can’t find a way to attach it to my response.
