Can I Use the Curt Clevis Pin with Handle and Clip with Weight Distribution Towing 10K Camper?

Updated 05/06/2026 | Published 05/03/2026

Question:

I have 2023 Silverado 2500 HD. Tow a 10,000 camping trailer and use an equalizer load leveling hitch. I wonder if this straight hitch pin will work well with this combination. My angled pin is starting to deform the hole. Surely don’t want to under buy and I can find no specs. Nervous to purchase w/o asking. Thanks for your reply! Mile

Hello Mike,

I'm really glad that you wrote in.

I would not recommend using the Curt Clevis Pin with Handle and Clip # C45804 for your setup. While the 5/8-inch diameter is correct, that style of pin is intended for light-duty or utility applications and is not designed or rated for the kinds of forces involved in towing a 10,000 lb trailer with a weight distribution hitch. With your Silverado 2500 HD and Equal-i-zer system, the hitch pin is under constant shear and shock loads, and a clevis pin simply isn’t built for that kind of use.

A better and proper choice would be a standard hitch pin specifically made for receiver hitches, like the Pin and Clip for 2" and 2-1/2" Hitches - 5/8" Diameter x 3-3/16" Span # C21500. This is a solid steel hitch pin designed for towing applications, and it will handle the load and movement from your setup much more reliably. The bent pin and clip design also does a better job of staying secure under load compared to a clevis-style pin.

Since you mentioned your current angled pin is starting to deform the hole, that’s usually caused by a combination of load and movement at the connection point. Switching to a proper hardened hitch pin like # C21500 is the right move and will help prevent further wear. If there is still some play in the receiver, you might also consider adding an anti-rattle device down the road to help reduce movement even more.

What kind of camper do you have, and what adventure are you looking most forward to this summer?
