Is Dexter 6k Axle Compatible With Kodiak Disc Brakes For 7k Axle

Updated 05/05/2026 | Published 05/01/2026

Question:

Is the Dexter 7461121 axle rated at 6000 pounds compatible with the Kodiak Kodiak KOD95FR disc brake kit? I know that brake kit usually pairs with a 7000 pound axle and a kit with smaller rotors usually pairs with the 6000 pound axle but I want the extra braking power of the 13inch rotor on the larger brake kit.

Hey John! Yes, the Dexter Trailer Axle Beam # 7461121 is compatible with the Kodiak Disc Brakes # KOD95FR. These brakes fit the 5-bolt brake flange found on this axle, and the bearings have the same inner diameter (ID) making them compatible with the spindle. The Kodiak also comes with a 2.25" ID grease seal which is the same size used on the axle so everything lines up perfectly.

What kind of trailer are you working on?

2021 Grand Design 297RSTS. Will be driving up both the Dempster and Dalton Highways to the Arctic Ocean in the middle of September. Also driving the Top of the World Highway from Dawson Creek to Tok the day before it closes for the winter on September 15th. That’s about 1500 miles of rough gravel with some frost heaved pavement thrown in for good measure. Stock suspension and brakes are totally inadequate for that. I’m also going to be ordering 6K Comfort Ride slipper springs and Moryde suspension cross braces. Upgrading to 235/65R16C 8 euro spec cargo van tires as well. Not much in the way of emergency service up there. I spent three years working on the Prudhoe Bay oil field so I know what I’m getting into.

@JohnH that sounds like quite the adventure! This will be a really nice setup. The Roadmaster Comfort Ride # RM49NQ combined with the X-Factor # MR33WR on the front and rear hangers is about as solid as it gets for reinforcing your suspension. In your case, you will definitely get the most out of it.
