Bumper Mounted Bike Carrier Recommendation For RV Trailer
Updated 07/14/2014 | Published 07/11/2014 >
Question:
Hi. I have a Ford F250 supercab truck and pull an RV trailer. Im looking for a light weight bike rack with no frame contact mounting platform style? for 2 bikes . The only racks I have seen so far have a raised shank that tends to put the bike level higher which limits the driver view out the windshield. I have a Thule 916XT now not exactly light weight. I thought about removing the folding part designed to attach to the receiver and just it directly, but concerned about getting it all tight enough that it wont bounce around. I see Swagman has an RV bumper mount that might work, but not sure if it can be tightened. Any suggestions? Thanks,

I cannot recommend removing the tilting portion of the Thule # TH916XT carrier you have. I would not be able to tell you whether it can be mounted in the receiver and if it would allow a hitch pin to be used in this manner.
If you are looking for a bumper mounted bike carrier for your RV, I recommend the Swagman Platform-Style 2 Bike Carrier, part # S64663. This carrier will fit a 2 inch hitch receiver, or can be mounted on a continuously welded 4 X 4-1/2 inch tall steel RV bumper. This carrier has a capacity of 80 lbs, and holds wheels up to 3-1/2 inches wide. This carrier weighs less than 40 lbs, so it is a bit lighter than the Thule carrier you said you have.
You said you are concerned with a bike carrier interfering with your view out of the windshield. If you are looking for a front mounted bike carrier for your Ford F-250, I need some more information. I need the year of the truck and whether you have a hitch mounted to the front of it currently. With that information I can make some recommendations for you.
