Hey Ken, thanks for reaching out, and good question. You’re not wrong to think about that.
The backer on the Horse Trailer Side Pad # HTP60BK is a compressed fiberboard/cardboard-type material, but it’s designed to be used in covered, interior trailer walls, not exposed to direct weather or constant moisture. In a normal horse trailer setup where it’s mounted against a metal wall and stays relatively dry, it holds up fine. It’s not sitting out in the open or getting soaked under normal use.
Where you run into problems is if there’s ongoing moisture intrusion, like leaks, condensation buildup, or poor ventilation. In that kind of environment, yeah, over time you could see swelling, softening, or even mold issues. So, the key is making sure the trailer itself is sealed up well and ventilated. If your trailer tends to stay damp or you’ve had moisture issues before, it might be worth looking at alternatives with a plastic or composite backing, but in a typical dry interior install, these pads don’t have a history of failing from moisture.

The back is a heavy cardboard, but it is pretty much identical to the old one we tore off. Our trailer is about a 1995 and these are the perfect replacement parts! Our trailer is sealed to the weather and they survived their first N. Michigan winter.
