They sure can Dave! The 1-1/2" Wide Caliber Marine Slides item # CA26AJ can indeed be attached directly to your boat trailer's bunks. Removing the carpet first or installing them on new bunks without carpet will not change how effective they are.

These sliders work great on my carpeted bunks. If I had seen these before I re-carpeted the bunks, I would have used them on the bare wood. They greatly improved the launching of my small aluminum boat and reduced the cranking when loading the boat on again.
