Replacement Water Heater for a Atwood Model G6A-7 Part 96202

Updated 04/22/2026 | Published 04/13/2026

Question:

Hello. I am looking to replace the water heater in my Jay Flight by Jayco SLX 174BH. I recently removed the existing unit and discovered that the tank is completely broken in the middle, so it needs to be fully replaced. The current unit is a Dometic water heater, Product 958680943, Model G6A-7 Part 96202. I have contacted Jayco, Camping World, and several other companies, but so far I have not been able to get a clear answer or locate a direct replacement. The biggest challenge I am running into is matching the cutout dimensions. My current cutout measures 12-5/8 inches L x 16-1/4 inches W x 17-5/8 inches D. I would greatly appreciate any guidance on a compatible replacement unit that would fit these dimensions without requiring major modifications. Thank you for your time and assistance.

Hey Steven thanks for all of the information! The closest size replacement I have for your Atwood Model G6A-7 Part 96202, is the Dometic RV Water Heater item # DMC74FR. Like the other ones you've ran into it has slightly different dimensions at 12-3/4" tall x 12-3/4" wide x 19-7/8" deep. However, there is nothing available that will match your current dimensions exactly.

The Dometic RV Water Heater item # DMC74FR has the same 6 gallon capacity as your Atwood and recovers 12 gallons per hour.

The Furrion item # FR98SR you were looking at is a tankless water heater that would be a solid upgrade over your Atwood. It measures 12-5/8" wide x 12-5/8" tall x 19-1/4" deep and provides unlimited hot water.

What year is your Jayco and how much hot water do you use when you're camping? Do you shower and do dishes at the same time?

I bought the Furrion for my class A RV. It was easy to install and now we have as much hot water as we need... have you ever took a 20 minute shower with standard RV water heater... my wife does. BUY IT!

I bought the tankless Furion for my 35BH. It was an easy switch out and only took a couple hours. I had easy access from my bathroom to run the wiring for the thermostat. The only draw back is if your camping in an area with out full hook ups you will have to watch your usage or you will fill your tank pretty quick. We love the unlimited hot water and it’s an easy trade off for us.

I love my Furion tankless water heater. it's a pretty much endless supply of hot water, and it saves on propane too. since it's on demand, it only runs when there's a demand for hot water. No more listening to the water heater run just to keep the 6-gallon tank warm. If it fits in your rig, go for it.

Like the other comments the tankless has been awesome. I was very disappointed that the product was listed as a replacement for my Dometic, but the dimensions were just a hair too tall and a few inches too narrow on width. But I did some modifications to the RV and added some plates to cover the gaps on the sides. Hot water always on demand! On the road it is a problem to take long showers, but it is fantastic to do as others have said (do dishes, shower, have hot water throughout) when connected to waste. First World problem for sure!
