Is Demco Recon Stealth Adapter Better Than Gooseneck Trailer Adapters On Trailer Side?

Published 04/09/2026

Question:

I’ve seen people use gooseneck adapters that attach to the trailer instead. Why would I go with something like this instead?

Hey Derek, that’s a smart question! Most don't think about the different options.

Both have their purpose, so there isn't really an easy answer.

With the Demco Recon Stealth hitch like # DM63UV, or the MOLLE panel kits for specific vehicle fits # DM54QJ, # DM82SJ, and # DM22SJ, you’re getting a true 5th wheel hitch connection at the kingpin, just mounted to your gooseneck ball.

That’s different from a trailer-mounted gooseneck adapter, which changes the connection on the trailer side, which is more involved. The Recon Stealth uses Demco’s wraparound jaw and locking bar, so the connection at the kingpin is basically a traditional 5th wheel hitch. This is more secure and less rough on the truck and trailer compared to a gooseneck connection.

Now if you wanted to go through more trouble and spend more money, you could upgrade the trailer's gooseneck coupler with a cushioned option like one from Shocker Hitch.

So if you want to keep your trailer’s kingpin setup standard and still tow from your gooseneck ball, this style makes a lot of sense. Quick and easy to install or remove since it breaks down into sections and only attaches on top of the ball.

What truck and trailer are you using, Derek? That’ll help narrow down whether the Recon Stealth is the better fit for your setup.
