Why Can't Curt Hitches be Used with Vertical Bike Racks

Updated 04/01/2026 | Published 03/29/2026

Question:

I noticed on Curts website they now have this warning: Not compatible for use with vertical hanging bicycles bike racks that require the bicycles to be hung / mounted vertically Could you explain exactly what the compatability issue is?

Hey Noah, so the vertical bike racks like the Thule Revert # TH73VA are so tall they end up putting quite a bit more leverage and torque on the hitch they are installed in. This is why Curt doesn't want you to use them with their hitches like the part # C36RV that you referenced. Years ago Curt didn't want anyone carrying a bike rack with their hitches unless a stabilizer strap was going to be used to but they eventually relaxed on that. Do you have a hanging bike rack?
