How to Add a 7-Way Connector to a 2023 Ford F-150 XLT w/out the Towing Package

Updated 03/08/2026 | Published 03/04/2026

Question:

Do you have a T plug that will fit a 2023 f150 xlt to add a 7 pin trailer plug that is all plug and play without cutting wires. My truck only has the flat 4 pin and I was wanting to add the 7 pin

No, we do not James and there isn't going to be a plug in one if you don't have the tow package. If your 2023 Ford F-150 XLT doesn't have the factory tow package that came with the 7-way there's no USCAR connector, pictured below, to plug a custom fit connector to. The 4-way t-connectors like item # C63NR that fit your F-150 plug into a factory port are only included with the models that came with the tow package. Now if you find a USCAR connector behind your bumper you can install the item # C36GJ.

To add a 7-Way connector to your 2023 Ford F-150 XLT, you'll need the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller item # ETBC7. The kit includes a pre-wired 7- and 4-way trailer connector that mounts easily at the rear of your F-150 with an included bracket. This kit is designed for use on a vehicle with an existing 4-way trailer connector, like yours, and plugs directly into it.

You'll then run the blue wire up to your brake controller, the black wire to your battery, and then find a suitable ground for the white wire. I attached a wiring diagram below so you can see how to get the item # ETBC7 installed. It comes with all necessary wiring and circuit breakers needed to complete the installation.

What kind of trailer are you pulling and do you need a brake controller?

James, If you just want to power the lights on your trailer you could use a 4 way plug from your truck to a 7 way plug using only the pins required to run your lights. I would NOT recommend this as a bypass for trailer brakes as this would be EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. It's better to spend the time and a few bucks on the ETBC7 installation kit and a brake controller that fits your needs as suggested by Jerred. Better to be safe than EXTREMELY SORRY. Be safe out there.
