Question:

I need to install a 7 way receptacle and electric brake controller on my 2016 Jeep Wrangler that does not have the factory tow package. What are your recommendations?

Hi Brad!

Does your 2016 Jeep Wrangler have an aftermarket 4-flat already installed? If it does, you can skip to the next step. If it does not have one yet, you will need to start with one and the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # C55124 is a quick and easy one to get installed.

From there, you will want the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller - 7-Way RV and 4-Way Flat - 10 Gauge Wires # ETBC7. This will piggyback off that 4-flat and will get you the rest of the functions needed. The last part you will need is a brake controller.

I am preferrable to the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller w/ Universal Wiring Harness - Dash Knob - Proportional # RED52VR as it's very reliable and easy to use. It also doesn't take up any of the foot well area, and being 6'5", this is a huge plus for me. I saw you were looking at a Tekonsha controller, but they are having some issues at the moment so I would recommend going a different way for the controller. The Redarc is more expensive, but I really like them.

What kind of trailer will you be towing?
