What Harnesses Do I Need To Get So I Can Flat Tow My Jeep And Tow a Trailer

Updated 02/23/2026 | Published 02/18/2026

Question:

I have a 2005 Jeep Liberty that I use as a towed vehicle behind my RV and also use it to tow a trailer. I have wiring harnesses for both purposes and they both have issues. Is there one harness that serves both purposes or can you tell me what I should use for each that wont conflict with each other?

Hey, Michael.

There is a solution to this. It sounds like you may be using a t-harness for both flat towing your Jeep and for when you're towing a trailer with it. As you have been experiencing, there is an issue when you use two t-harnesses with one another. What you will need to do is remove the t-harness used for when you're flat towing your Jeep. You can keep the trailer harness installed.

You're going to need to get Roadmaster diode kit part # RM-154. With this installed you will be able to seamlessly flat tow your Jeep or tow your trailer with your Jeep when you need to.

What kind of plug do you have on the front of your Jeep, a 4-flat or a 7-way plug?
