Hey Mark! You can definitely leave the etrailer Anti-Rattle Hitch Collar # e38FV installed on your receiver. That is one of the best parts about it, it can stay on the hitch so its always ready to go. The knob doesn't have to be tightened down, that metal collar that hangs down around it will keep it from falling off.

Are you using the anti-rattle for towing or accessories like a bike rack/cargo carrier?

I disagree I left mine on and tightened it on regular basis it loosened up and the bolt came out. Now it is just rattle all the time. I need to remove it and throw it away.

@Robin Interesting - I just checked mine again in the garage, and while it was a bit loose it seemed to operate like the expert answer above describes. I tried to unscrew it all the way and after many turns gave up. The metal collar kept the screw captured in place.

That’s a good question, Mark, and a good answer that follows. I have noticed that the knob will loosen over time, which is no surprise given all the bumps and movement going down the road. But it tightens right back up easily - I just check mine from time to time.

Mark, This thing works as advertised! No more rattling when towing over uneven surfaces. I tightens the nut hand tight and have no issues. I'm waiting for the 2 1/2 in one for my enclosed car trailer. Good luck,
