What Is The Range Of The MORryde Motion Activated Light Strips for RV Steps MR42AR

Updated 02/02/2026 | Published 01/27/2026

Question:

What is the approximate range of the motion sensor? I wonder if a person or doge walks by the rv but does not approach the steps if the light will go on even if not needed. Thanks.

Hello John, thanks for reaching out, and good question. For the MORryde Motion Activated Light Strips # MR42AR the illumination range of the built-in sensors is about 3-5 feet from the step. They’re designed to detect someone approaching or stepping toward the entry, so as soon as you come within roughly 3-5 feet, the lights will activate and stay on while motion continues in that zone.

So it might kick on at night if someone or something walks by within that range. It will turn off after 20 seconds if no motion is detected.

I mounted them under the top 3 steps. This kept them from activating from more than about 3 feet out.

@John Thanks for sharing, John! Sounds like the actual range might not be quite as much as the manufacturer boasts. Definitely good to know.

I mounted mine on the Bottom Step on 2 trailers and they have a range of approximately 3-4 feet before coming on. Is what I was hoping for. People or animals walking by have not been a problem turning them on

@ChrisC Yea that's what I'm hearing from a lot of folks now that I posted this. Sounds like the actual range is not quite as much as the manufacturer states. Thanks for sharing your experience though. Definitely good to know.

I have the fabric step covers on my steps and this limits the range of the motion sensors to the actual step due to the overlap of the fabric on the bottom of the step. Mine are mounted under all 4 of my steps.

I mounted my motion sensor light per directions and it did not work at all, even after replacing with new batteries. To be fair, I didn’t try a differnt step location.

@Robert Hey Robert. Yea trying a different location might do the trick. If you can't get it to activate at all it might be worth looking into a warranty claim.
