Using Blue Ox Patriot Portable Flat Tow Brake System on 2000 Jeep Cherokee

Updated 02/17/2026 | Published 01/16/2026

Question:

3 questions, 1 Can this system work with a brake buddy battery saverinch charging device that maintains towed vehicle battery charge through 12V source from Motor Home? 2 Is there a way to remotely apply towed vehicle brake separate from inertia sensor i.e. use towed vehicle braking without motorhome brakes being applied? I really liked this feature of the brake buddy Stealth system as I could almost stop my Jayco Melbourne MH on a Mercedes 3500 Sprinter chassis with just my wrangler TJ brakes on flat ground. 3 These older Jeeps rely heavily on vacuum assist braking to get any decent towed vehicle brake assistance. With the Stealth system there is a auxiliary vacuum pump with isolation valve that kicks on when braking to maintain vacuum assist. Can I reinstall this with the Blue ox Patriot portable system without causing problems?

Hi Wes; you need to use a 12V outlet with the 12V plug on the Blue Ox Patriot # BLU37TR. The Brake Buddy has a charge line to keep the battery on your vehicle charged, it isn't designed to tie into a brake system like this one.

The remote/monitor has a manual override so you can activate the brakes without the motorhome brakes applied. This system is designed to work with the factory brake system, I would not try to install that auxiliary pump with the Patriot.

If you're worried about how the brakes will perform I would check out the Curt RVi Series 4 Portable Flat Tow Brake System # RVI44FR. This has specific settings for vacuum assist brakes. It will also use a 12V outlet for power and has a manual override.

Hey Wes, how did things go with the Blue Ox Patriot and your Wrangler’s brake setup? Did the manual override and 12V connection work the way you wanted? Your feedback could really help others comparing it with the RVi system.

@RobinH I did not purchase this portable system. Using brake buddy stealth system from older installation on a jeep wrangler with certain modifications for a jeep cherokee.
