Recommended Air Force One Braking System for a 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland and How Its Powered

Updated 01/18/2026 | Published 01/15/2026

Question:

I have a 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland that is new to me that has the Air Force One brake system installed by the previous owner. The Air Force One does not have the vacuum line hooked up I presume because the Jeep has electric braking not an air system. In the videos Ive seen the ignition is off in the Jeep when towing so my question is how does the electric brake system get powered if the Jeeps ignition is off? What am I missing? I have already ordered the Demco Air Force One Air Jumper for Freightliner BrakeSync-Equipped Chassis and the Blue Ox 7-Wire to 6-Wire, Coiled Electrical Cord from etrailer. Thanks for your help!

Hey Rich, welcome back! The Demco Air Force One like item # DM26VR is powered by your motorhome's air supply. When you apply the brakes in the motorhome, a proportional amount of air pressure is sent through the item # DM97ZR to the operating unit in your Jeep. This air pressure is used to mechanically activate the cylinder attached to the brake pedal arm. With your Jeep being placed in neutral for flat towing there's no resistance to the brake pedal being applied.

There is a 12v power wire that is attached to a fuse block near your Jeep's battery. This has minimal power draw and the required charge line item # DM66VR will keep your battery topped off. I've attached a diagram and linked a couple of installation videos below so you can see how the electrical system is setup.

You'll want to make sure you follow the flat towing steps in your owner's manual but other than that it sounds like you're ready to go.

What kind of motorhome do you have?

Hey Jerred! Thanks for the reply and the useful information! We have a (new to us) 2022 Fleetwood Discovery 36Q. We traded in our 2018 Winnebago Vista 29VE this past summer. I think i am comfortable using the Air Force One braking system's current installation as is. I guess now i am curious how the breakaway system works on the Air Force One. If the motorhome does become detached from the towed vehicle there goes the air supply. Does the Air Force One have an air pump to supply air the brake piston? Also, kind of unrelated, the supply air line to the Brake Sync fitting on the back of the Discovery got broken off right behind the fitting that the Air Jumper from the RV to the Jeep connects. Does etrailer have those fittings available or parts to repair that connection?

@RichA You're welcome and congrats on your new motorhome. When triggered the breakaway on the Demco Air Force One like item # DM26VR uses the reserve air inside the system to activate the cylinder attached to your Jeep's brakes. The Replacement RV-Side Pushlock Connector item # SM99625 is the replacement for the quick connect that comes with the Air Force one but I am not sure what fitting is on the end of your Fleetwood Discovery's broken one.
