Do RV Converters Like PowerMax 12V AC To DC Converters Work With Series And Parallel Battery Wiring?

Question:

Do PowerMax converters support series or parallel battery wiring?

They do, Megan. PowerMax converters like the 45A # PM34VR, 55A # PM94VR, 60A # PM44VR, and 100A # PM84VR can charge batteries wired in series or parallel, as long as the total system voltage is 12 volts.

That means you can run multiple batteries to increase capacity, whether you’re building a larger lead-acid bank or upgrading to lithium. So, you can have a single 12v, 2 12v wired in parallel, or even 2 6v wired in series, and the converter will still see 12v and be able to charge the bank.

The converter doesn’t care how the batteries are arranged internally - it just sees a 12V battery bank and charges it according to the ed charging mode and voltage settings.

If you want to share how many batteries you’re running and what type they are, I can help confirm the amperage choice makes sense.

Hi Andrew, I saw you talking with Megan about this topic. What if I switch from two 12V batteries to a pair of 6V batteries wired in series later on?

@Tim Good morning Tim. That’s totally fine! As long as the final output of the battery bank is still 12 volts, the PowerMax converters don’t care whether that comes from 12V batteries in parallel or 6V batteries in series - they’ll charge it the same way. A lot of people use 2 6V batteries in series to get a bit more amp hour capacity than a standard 12V battery.
