Replacement Master Cylinder for a Titan Model 20 Actuator w/ Drum Brakes

Updated 01/03/2026 | Published 12/28/2025

Question:

Hello, I have a trailer with a Titan Model 20 actuator with drum brakes. I was looking at a few of the M/C listings, questions asked and answered, but I still have a question on these master cylinders. Both the disc and drum models have the same casting number 23744 and look the same. I see the drum master cylinder cannot be used for the disc brakes. Is the same true for the disc master cylinder not being able to be used on drum brakes? What is the difference in the master cylinders?

Hey J.D. It has to do with the pressure. Drum brake master cylinders have a check valve on the inside that regulates the psi going through the brake lines. You'll blow your seals out using a disc brake master cylinder like item # T4749501042 on drum brakes.

Since your Titan Model 20 actuator is for drum brakes, you'll need the Replacement Master Cylinder and Push Rod Assembly for Drum Brakes item # DX66FR or item # T2374600 if you need the entire cylinder assembly.

What kind of trailer do you have?

Jerred H, Thank you for the reply. To finish the thought, the differences are internal. There is no way to identify one to the next from their external appearances. To be safe/sure, purchase the correct one for the job. To answer your question, my Trailer is a tandem axle Hi-Tech (stenciled on the trailer with their phone number from many years ago). The manufacturer's tag on the trailer reads Nichols Trailer Company in Panama Beach FL, which appears to be a middleman for the fabricator that actually built the trailer (I don't recall the name). The trailer was made in 1996, the VIN is NATL2712000, with GAWR of 12,000 pounds (light weight ~ 2,000 pounds). The few people I spoke with in FL were very nice but they really couldn't help me with info on the trailer due to the age (no records have been kept from ~ 30 years ago). I wasn't able to attach a photo in this reply. Thanks again, J.D. Lapple

@JdL You're welcome. Yeah, that is a common issue amongst trailers made to this day. There's no way to identify parts on trailers like you see on automobiles where you can look up the VIN.
