Installation of Kat's Heaters Custom Fit Engine Block Heater on 2010 Toyota Corolla

Updated 12/29/2025 | Published 12/07/2025

Question:

Ive got a 2012 Corolla. The installation of 11813 calls for silicone grease to be applied to the element of the cartridge and yet another calls for LOCTITE Automotive RTV Silicone Gasket Maker Black 598. Which one and is it applied directly to the heating element and then ed? That doesnt seem logical to put gasket maker on a heating element. Please help me understand so I can order and do it the right way. thanks so very much. Pete

Hi Pete; all you need to do is put NSCG silicone grease G-624 on the # KH11813 cartridge. This block heater doesn't need any gasket maker, and you definitely do not want to apply it to the heating element. The clip will lock it in place so gasket maker isn't necessary to seal it up or hold it.

Hey Pete, how did things go with applying the silicone grease to your Corolla’s block heater cartridge? Your update could make it easier for others working through the same install.

@RobinH Well, I applied silicone grease and it's working. I'm still not sure why. Is the heat transfer better with the grease than just metal to metal? You know, me being an IT Tech and a DIY mechanic i'm wondering if thermal paste for CPU's would be a better idea OR a high temp copper anti seize that they use on O2 sensors.
