Will 2017 Ram 3500 Short Bed Have Enough Clearance With MORryde GooseTech

Updated 11/30/2025 | Published 11/27/2025

Question:

We have a 2017 Ram 3500 dually Mega cabshort bed 6.4ft? Currently we pull a 37ft 5th wheel with Demco auto sliding hitch. Will this hitch system work on our truck as far as cab clearance while turning?

Hi Darla! Clearance can definitely be an issue with a short bed and a gooseneck adapter like the MORryde GooseTech # MR47MV. If you have a tapered nose you can probably manage. However, I recommend measuring for clearance just to be sure. You can use the following formula:

(A + B) - C = Clearance

A = Distance from center of gooseneck ball to truck cab

B = Length of offset (if you aren't using an offset ball this is 0)

C = Width of trailer divided by 2

You want at least 4" of clearance to make a 90 degree turn. If you have a little less you will have to test it out once it is on there so you are aware of your limitations. If you have the prep package you can use an offset ball like the Gen-Y Hitch Gooseneck Trailer Hitch for Dodge Ram OEM Puck Systems # GY83XR to gain additional clearance. This has a 5" offset so you would use that for "B" in the formula. You also need to know the bolt pattern of your existing pin box. The # MR47MV is designed to fit a Lippert 1621.

What kind of 5th wheel do you have?
