Question:
Hello. I would like to add a cargo roof rack to my ARE fiberglass cap but there are not tracks currently installed. How do you recommend that I proceed? My main goal is to load a kayak or two and a canoe on top and travel up and down the east coast. That equals a ton of highway miles. I just want to confirm the addition is strong enough as I also do not like to drive slow. Thanks so much.

Hey Bonnie, thanks for the picture! To add a roof rack to your ARE fiberglass cap, I recommend the Rhino-Rack Heavy-Duty Roof Rack for Camper Shells item # Y01-120B. This is a complete roof rack kit with 63" long tracks that can be mounted on a camper shell. This kit comes with all hardware necessary to mount the tracks to the roof of your fiberglass top.
The Rhino-Rack item # Y01-120B has 54" long square bars which will give you a 220 lbs capacity. There's no speed limit on this roof rack kit. If you install it correctly it's not going anywhere.
To transport a pair of kayaks or a kayak and a canoe, you can use the Thule Compass Kayak Roof Rack w/ Tie-Downs item # TH890000. This system has a 130 lbs capacity and measures 32" long x 7" wide x 19" tall. It weighs only 36 lbs and works with hulls up to 36" wide. The Compass will allow you to carry your kayaks or canoe in a vertical (post-style) position so you can mount one on each side of carrier.
What kind of kayaks and canoe do you have? Do you have any specific stops planned?
