Troubleshooting Surge Brakes Not Releasing Pressure

Updated 11/14/2025 | Published 10/17/2025

Question:

I have a 1996 Mastercraft trailer with a Dexter surge brake. I have adjusted the brake shoes and put in new wheel cylinders, but they are not releasing and get very hot. Do you think I need to replace the brake springs or is the master cylinder not releasing the pressure? Thx for your help.

Hi Don; since the brakes aren't releasing it sounds like you have a bad master cylinder. Depending on the design it may also be the shock. It sounds like they are drum brakes so assuming it is the Dexter Model 60 the Replacement Master Cylinder Assembly # T4395100 you were looking at will work as a replacement. If you need a replacement shock it is the # T2336200.

Hey Don, how did things turn out with the replacement master cylinder on your Mastercraft trailer brakes? Did that fix the issue with them not releasing? Your update could make it easier for others troubleshooting the same problem.
