Which Gooseneck Pin Box is Better a Gen-Y or a Shocker?

Updated 10/15/2025 | Published 10/11/2025

Question:

I have a 2018 F-350 dually, my camper is a Phoenix 334FL, I want to change from a 5th wheel hitch, to a Gooseneck, I was looking at the Shocker 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Pinbox for Lippert 1621/0719 and Gen-Y. 1st question is will it fit, 2nd question, is it strong enough to handle my camper. 3rd question, Will this hitch actually make my rids smoother, it is really rough when on a concrete highway, a lot of chucking. 4th question, My drive way is on about a 30 degree angle backing up hill. will this hitch handle it. Your feedback would be appreciated.

Hey Kenneth, welcome back. Out of those two options a Gen-Y Hitch Shock Absorbing 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Pin Box like item # GY38FR is going to be a better replacement option than the Shocker item # SHK23MR. It's got way less moving parts and the torsion pin box does a great job of absorbing road shock and chucking so you don't feel it in your truck.

As far as fitting goes, in order to identify which gooseneck pin box is the correct one for your Phoenix 334FL, I'll need you to email me a picture of the sticker that's attached to your current pin box. The sticker should say date of manufacture, weight capacity, and have some form of RPO, LCI, or serial number on it. If you could email me a picture of it or carefully put all that information where it says Reply to Jerred H, I can find the right gooseneck pin box for you. Also if yours says Turning Point or Rhino Box on it let me know because those bolt patterns are easy to identify replacements for.

A Gen-Y like item # GY38FR is going to all but eliminate that chucking feeling. The torsion set up works really works great with dealing with that discomfort as well. The push pull feeling you get will be drastically improved upon.

As far as the 30° incline goes, you may need to take some measurements. How long is the bed in your F-350 dually and do you have a recessed well gooseneck connection? When you're pulling your trailer with a 5th wheel hitch how close is the back of the cab to the front nose of your trailer when you're at 30°?

You can add this information and any other questions you have where it says Reply to Jerred H and I'll be happy to answer them. If you're emailing me a picture go ahead and send it directly to the address you receive this response from.

Hey Kenneth, thanks for the pictures! I just spoke with Lippert and your Phoenix 334FL has a 1621 pin box. That means you'll need the Gen-Y Hitch Shock Absorbing 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Pin Box item # GY38FR. The latch will not have an issue on the 30° incline. The main concern will be clearance between the nose of the camper and the back of your truck cab, which it sounds like you've got covered.

From the top bolt of the Gen-Y item # GY38FR to the gooseneck ball is going to be 21.53".

You will also need the Safety Chain with 2 Hooks for Gen-Y 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Pin Box item # GY49GR. Safety chains are required for gooseneck connections and they are not included with the pin boxes. These will attach to that cross looking cutout by the Gen-Y logo.

I've attached a dimensional diagram below of the Gen-Y item # GY38FR.
