Replacement Brake Controller That Will Use The Same Plug As A Reese Brakeman

Updated 10/30/2025 | Published 10/01/2025

Question:

I have an 08 Ram 1500 p/u, with a Reese brakeman compact controller which is probably as old as the truck. If I upgrade to a newer brake controller, can I still use the same connecting harness? Thanks

Hi Simon!

As long as the plug you have going to your Reese Brakeman looks like the picture I have attached, you can go with any Tekonsha brake controller and it will plug right in. Reese and Tekonsha are under the same parent company and I am pretty sure they have never changed that plug, but still check to make sure.

Did you have a controller you were looking at? If not, the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller - 1 to 4 Axles - Proportional # 90195 is one of, if not the best controllers on the market. It's easy to use, easy to set up, works with electric or electric-over-hydraulic trailer brakes, and can handle up to 4 axles. It's the one to get. At least in my opinion.

Hey Simon, how did things go with upgrading the brake controller on your Ram? Did the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 end up plugging into your existing harness without any issues? Your update could make it easier for others working with older Reese setups.

@LazerS, Yes, I had to buy the additional wiring harness but it installed flawlessly.

@SimonJ Glad it's working well for you! The P3 is about as good as it gets, so you will continue to be happy with it! : ) What are you towing?
