Where Do I Place the Spring Hangers on a Homemade Trailer w/ Three Axles?

Updated 12/08/2025 | Published 09/25/2025

Question:

This is a home built trailer with 2 dexter 3500lb axles and i added a boat trailer axle. I am a certified welder. Someone else welded it and i bought it off marketplace with rear axle broken loose. My question is what should the spacing be between the hangers on center ?

Hey Hyrum. I have no way of knowing where exactly to put the hangers on your homemade trailer. It depends on the length of the springs, equalizers, and what type of trailer it is. With a setup like you're dealing with I recommend putting the hangers back where they used to be. Hopefully the person who made the trailer did all the correct measurements originally. If not you'll need to disassemble the entire suspension system and start from scratch using something like the Triple-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit for Double-Eye Springs - 1-1/2" Front/Rear, 2-1/2" Center item # APTT3. If you do decide to do this I would find an axle that is the same style as the two that match.

Why did someone add a third axle to a tandem axle trailer?

Hey Hyrum, what ended up happening with the hanger spacing on your homemade trailer? Were you able to get everything lined up again using the triple-axle hanger kit? Your update could make it easier for the next person working on a similar setup.
