Can Watchdog Power Center Surge Protector Be Used On Both 30A AND 50A RV?

Updated 10/07/2025 | Published 09/24/2025

Question:

We travel with friends. one has a 30A Cougar and I’ve got a 50A Cedar Creek. Is there a version of the Watchdog Power Center that works for both, or do we need different models?

Brian, you’ll each want the version that matches your RV’s service. The # HU84ZR is built for 30A rigs like your friend’s Cougar, while the # HU74ZR is made for 50A rigs like your Cedar Creek. They both do the same job - voltage boosting, surge protection, and emergency shutoff - but the wiring and capacity are different.

You can use adapters to plug into smaller pedestals and still use the 50A on both, but that would sort of defeat the purpose of getting the bigger unit, and you wouldn't both be able to use it at the same time of course. I'd recommend just getting the correct one for each RV.

Do you and your buddy usually camp together at places with sketchy power?

Hi Andrew, I read you comments you replied back on the question the gentleman had. I am very interested in this product but I just want to make sure I am understanding and clear on what you are saying. My camper is rigged for 50 amp and I use 50 amp when available but we enjoy a couple campgrounds where they only supply 30 amp. So can I still use the 50 amp model and adapt to the 30 amp outlet with the same functions of the 50 amp. Thank you for your response! Joe K

@JoeK Hey there! Yes I worded it a little strange, sorry about that. But you can definitely use the 50A version # HU74ZR and adapt it to fit a 30A outlet and it will still function normally as if you were just using a 30A Surge Protector / Voltage Booster. Does that help?

@AndrewN Hi Andrew! Yes that answered my question. Thank you very much for the quick response! One other question I have, does it matter where you put the surge protector? I see everyone puts them on the power post but I read an article that said you should put them where the cord would plug into the trailer then plug the cord into the surge protector. What is your opinion on this? Thanks Andrew!

@JoeK You're very welcome! So these Watchdog units are designed with a short cord that plugs into the power post pedestal, so it's meant to stay in that area outside. Then your RV power cord runs all the way out to plug into the booster/surge protector, as if it was running over to plug into the pedestal as it normally would. These can be left in the rain and it won't hurt it, long as it's not in a sitting puddle or submerged.
