Which Surge Protector Is Good For 2005 Newmar Mountain Aire Travel Trailer Stored In Barn With 30A

Updated 10/23/2025 | Published 09/23/2025

Question:

We store our 2005 Newmar Mountain Aire in a barn and want to hook up to 30A power for battery charging. Would the HU84ZR still work indoors like that?

Sandy, the # HU84ZR is actually built as a portable-style power center, so it’s meant to plug into the pedestal (or wall outlet) and then accept your RV’s shore cord on the other side. That means it usually lives outside at the hookup point, and its housing is weather-resistant for that purpose.

If you’re using it in a barn or garage, that’s fine too - just keep it off the ground where it won’t sit in puddles or dust. Unlike the hardwired # HU72VR, there’s no rewiring involved; just plug into the pedestal > # HU84ZR > RV cord - then you’re good.

Do you plan to keep the RV plugged in long-term, or just occasionally top off batteries in storage?

I keep my travel trailer plugged in under a metal carport most of the year. If I use the HU84ZR like Sandy mentioned, is it okay to leave it connected 24/7, or should I disconnect once the batteries are full?

@Ryan Hey there Ryan! You can leave the # HU84ZR connected full-time - it’s designed for continuous use and will protect against power spikes or voltage dips the whole time. The only thing I’d recommend is making sure your RV’s converter or charger is all working properly and the batteries are good so no issues will arise. Do you know which converter your trailer uses?
