Can Go Power Inverter Charger Dual Leg Charge Batteries From Onan Generator?

Published 09/16/2025

Question:

Can the GP85QR 3000w dual leg inverter/charger charge my batteries from an Onan generator, or is it only for shore power?

Tyler, the # GP85QR will work with either shore power or a generator input. When you fire up your Onan, the inverter/charger’s built-in transfer switch senses the AC and routes it straight through to your RV’s panel, while also using that power to charge your batteries.

One important detail: the inverter doesn’t “re-sine-wave” generator output during pass-through. Whatever your generator produces is what your appliances see. That’s usually fine, but traditional Onans (non-inverter style) can sometimes deliver voltage sags or spikes under heavy load.

I strongly recommend adding a surge protector/EMS like the Power Watchdog with Bluetooth, 30 Amp portable # HU97FR. It’ll shut things down if the generator or pedestal power gets out of spec.

What size battery bank are you running now with your setup?
