Should Water Heater Door Area be Filled with Caulk

Question:
I have a 2016 Keystone Bullet Premier travel trailer. It has an Atwood 6 gallon water heater Model GC6AA-10E. There is a fairly large opening in the left side of the metal cabinet that provides access for the gas line. It appears that this opening was once filled with a puddy or caulking type material that has now deteriorated badly or melted away. Can you tell me what I should use to fill this opening or should I just leave it as it is? Thanks in advance.

It would help if I could see a picture but if there's no issue leaving it open I would probably leave it instead of filling it with any caulk. If you want to email me a picture you can.
