Why am I Getting an E6 Code on My Hughes Watchdog all was Good when Campground Tested Pedestal?

Updated 09/02/2025 | Published 08/12/2025

Question:

I have a 50 amp watchdog throwing an E6 code. Reported to campground and they checked pedestal - all seemed ok. I used the same watchdog. On 30 amp with by adapter, and it threw the same error. Does this allude to a faulty circuit board?

Hello Larry,

An E6 code on the 50-amp Hughes Watchdog # HU87FR usually means reverse polarity (hot and neutral swapped or another wiring issue at the pedestal). On 50-amp models it can also show up if L2 has a low-voltage or miswire situation, depending on the revision.

Since you tried both 50-amp and 30-amp with an adapter and got the same E6, that points more toward a wiring issue at the pedestal rather than your Watchdog itself. The campground might’ve tested with a simple meter, but the Watchdog is much more sensitive and can catch things they don’t.

Could it be your Watchdog’s board? Possibly, but that’s less likely. A bad board usually throws random codes or won’t power up at all. Yours is consistently giving the same warning, which suggests it’s doing its job.

Did you test the 30 amp by adapter at the same pedestal, or was this at a different pedestals?

Hey Larry, did you have a chance to test the 30 amp by adapter at a different pedestal to see if the E6 code still appears? I'm asking because understanding your outcome could help others who might face a similar issue.
