Hitch Extender for Clearing Spare With Bike Rack on 2024 Land Rover Defender

Updated 08/22/2025 | Published 08/11/2025

Question:

Hello, I have a Thule Helium 2 Bike Carrier which I have been using for a few years. However, now I need to fit it to a Land Rover Defender but it does not clear the back gate spare tire on that SUV. Can you please advise of a solution? Would a hitch extender solve the problem? Which one would you recommend? Would there be an easy on and off solution? Appreciate your support.

Hey Azmi! You can use a hitch extender to clear that spare on your Land Rover Defender. However, you have to keep in mind it will reduce the capacity of your hitch by 50%. As long as your bikes and bike rack don't exceed half the tongue weight capacity of your hitch you're set.

It doesn't have to be anything fancy so I recommend the RockyMounts Hitch Extender # RKY10008. This is an 8" extension that also includes a locking hitch pin to keep it secure. I also recommend adding the etrailer Anti-Rattle Hitch Collar for 2" Hitch Receivers # e38FV to help hold it in place and reduce noise/unwanted movement with that bike rack installed.

Where do you usually take your bikes?

Thank you Robin. I usually drive to various asphalt trails and smooth gravel trails in IL, and WI. I typically carry 2-4 bikes so I doubt they will exceed capacity, but will verify to be sure. Also, any thoughts on the Thule Hitch Extender 903750? And, is that anti rattle collar the most optimal in your opinion? Thanks?

@Azmi the # e38FV is nice because you can leave it on all the time so it is always ready to go. If you want a different design I would get the # RM-061 which also works well but it is a little less convenient if you're using it all the time. That Thule extension is fine if you want the rise/drop off of it. Thule discontinued it in June so we no longer have it in stock.
