Is Advent Air RV Air Conditioner ADV86SR Compatible With Old Pre-2024 AC System?

Updated 07/30/2025 | Published 07/23/2025

Question:

Im confused. Advent air conditioners states that they are NOT compatible with ANY systems 2024 and earlier, yet your system suggested this brand for my 2015 Cedar Creek Silverback 29RE. Additionally, several reviewers said it was recommended by your parts department for their 2019 and even older 24 y.o. units. What compatibility issues are they referring to?

Hello Dave, thanks for reaching out. The Advent Air RV Air Conditioner # ADV86SR uses the new R32 refrigerant instead of the old r410a. Any R32 unit will not be backwards compatible with r410a AC systems. The r32 refrigerant is more flammable, so AC manufacturers had to rearrange the internals of the AC units to move the refrigerant away from potential heat sources. So not only could you run into communication errors, but it is quite literally a fire hazard to try to use a new AC unit with an old system.

The R32 is a recent change that just happened this year. Back a few years ago there were not so many compatibility issues. So you may see some older answers saying Advent units are compatible with other AC systems, but this is no longer true. We are working on scrubbing this old info from the site so I do apologize for any confusion.

If you want to go with an Advent AC system, you will need to replace the rooftop unit, controller, distribution box and thermostat. For that, I recommend the following:

- Advent Air RV Air Conditioner System - Single Zone - 15,000 Btu - White - R32 # ADV92SR

Thanks, Jesse! That explains why it wouldn't work as a replacement. I'm looking to add a second A/C unit, replacing the Fantastic fan in the bedroom. The coach is prepped with supports, separate breaker and wiring for a 110 volt/20 amp circuit, two ducts, and thermostat wiring. I think the T-stat wiring goes to where the Fantastic fan control is on the bedroom wall, but it might go to the existing T-stat for the living area. So, Can I keep the existing ducted unit in the living area? Will an Advent unit tie in to the ductwork in the bedroom ceiling? Will an Advent unit work with a wall-mounted T-stat? Thanks for your help! Dave

@DaveD Hey Dave. So yes the advent unit I mentioned above, part # ADV92SR can be used to replace your roof vent with an AC unit. It comes with everything you need. You can keep the current ducted unit as is. The Advent unit can tie into the ducted system. It is recommended to run the advent unit on its own thermostat (included). It may work with your current thermostat but it is not something I can guarantee. Let me know if there is anything else I can do to help.
