Question:
I am concerned that the small ferrules that secures the cable to the truck lid could with time break free from the cable especially since I intend to mount 3 bikes on the carrier. It is for this reason that I think the Thule Passage, which uses straps is a safer alternative. Can you please provide you opinion on which system cable or straps would be able to hold a higher load. Thank you.

I spoke with one of my co-workers that has a Thule OutWay 3 Bike Rack, part # TH56BV, and he told me that he has had this carrier for a few years and it shows no signs of wearing out. This Carrier has a limited lifetime warranty and is put through extensive testing to make certain the cables that secure the carrier to the vehicle can withstand heavy use. The OutWay uses only 2 cables to secure the carrier to the vehicle instead of the 6 strap system typically found on trunk mount carriers, and features a cable lock with One Key System lock cylinder secures bikes to rack.
The Thule Passage, part # TH911XT, is a nice carrier as well with many great features, and has nylon straps to secure the rack in place on the vehicle.
Both are very good bike racks, but based on the opinion of someone who owns the OutWay, I would recommend the # TH56BV. Cables will not stretch or fade like straps and the ratcheting hubs provide a more secure fit than the strap buckles.
If you are going to be carrying bikes with alternative frames like kids bikes or women's bikes I recommend an adapter bar like part # TH982XT. This bar attaches between the seat post and the handlebar stem and allows the bike to be carried more evenly in the carrier while providing more ground clearance.
I have attached some links to videos about the products I mentioned you can check out.
