Weight Distribution Hitch for 2020 Ford Expedition Towing Boat Trailer

Updated 07/10/2025 | Published 07/08/2025

Question:

Hi, I have a 2020 Ford Expedition. The tow guide states that I need a WDH for towing over 6,000. My boat setup is pushing 7,000. The trailer has surge brakes. What are my options for a WDH that is compatible with surge brakes?

Hey Kenji! For a weight distribution hitch that is compatible with surge brakes I recommend the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System # EQ37100ET. A Fastway like the # FA92-00-0800 or # FA92-00-1000 you looked at will also work but I highly recommend the Equal-i-zer for the additional sway control. I tow a Jayco travel trailer that weighs the same as your boat setup using the same Expedition and I can tell you you're going to want the extra sway control, especially if it is windy.

The Equal-i-zer is rated for 600-1,000 lbs of tongue weight so I do recommend verifying your tongue weight falls into this range. You will also need the Pole-Tongue Adapter for Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution Systems # EQ95-01-5950 to be able to install it on the boat trailer. A 1-7/8" thin walled socket like # ALL643216 is also required for hitch ball installation.

What kind of boat do you have?

We have a 2016 Mastercraft X30. I have a Chevy 2500 to tow with but would prefer to not keep it since it’s rarely used. 7,000 miles in 4 years of ownership. I forgot to mention that the trailer has a swing away tongue. Is that going to be an issue with a WDH?

@KenjiH unfortunately it does. You will not be able to use weight distribution on that trailer.
