Looking For Safety Chains For Boat Trailer And Utility Trailer
Updated 07/14/2025 | Published 07/04/2025 >
Question:
Hi, I am looking into 2 safety trailer chains preferably with the clevis hook. One set would be for my boat trailer that weighs roughly 2000 pounds and a my boat 2500 pounds. So a total of 5500. Another set would be for my 14ft utility trailer that I would be using to haul a golf cart. What size and pounds capacity would be recommended? Also that would be either stainless or galvanized just because of the saltwater.

Hey Robert, thanks for reaching out. The BulletProof Hitches 1/4" Trailer Safety Chains # BPH25YR would work great for both trailers, so I recommend just getting two pairs of those. They are 37" long and have a 6,300 lb capacity per chain. So plenty of capacity for your boat trailer. Not sure what your utility trailer weighs but I imagine it isn't pushing 6,300 lbs even when fully loaded. The chains have a gold chromate finish which is good for rust resistance. I am not seeing we have anything stainless or galvanized. The chromate finish will be better than the zinc coating which is what most of the chains we offer use.

Okay, so the chromate finish will do fine with saltwater? Also, I have a 1/2 hammerlocks on my truck for the safety chains. Should I get the 1/2 size clevis hook?
