Is There A Way To Make The DL10770 Winch Retract And Extend Faster?

Updated 07/03/2025 | Published 06/26/2025

Question:

Hello Customer Service Team, I have a few very important question about the winch I bought from your company, namely: DL10770 model B 1500, last year on 12/12/2024, order 121852216. I use this winch to pull up the boat from the bottom of the slope, at approximately 60 degrees incline, to the top of the slope, to then store it. It is like a vertical lift but on an inclined plane, a slope. The biggest problem I have with this winch is that I have not seen if I can pull the cable out of the reel / drum without turning the handle and take it all the way down to the bottom of the slope where I can then hook it to pull the boat up the slope. In other words, I do not know if I can have the drum / reel rotate freely to take the line / wire rope out. Another problem is that when I pull the boat up the slope it takes a lot of time, I have to turn the handle many times and it becomes tiring. My intention with this winch was to save effort and time. Please tell me what solution you have for the problems shown above, so that I can enjoy the product I purchased from your company. Thank you in advance, Adrian

Hey Adrian,

Thank you for the rundown of what is going on with that winch. Unfortunately the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL10770 does not have the freewheel lever that allows you to freely release your line. It has to be turned manually to retract or extend. The other issue is that this specific winch is not to be used with a motor or drill for faster retracting. It needs to be hand cranked.

As much as I would love to have a solution with that winch you have, the only way to get those features you are wanting is to go with an upgraded winch with those features included. What kind of boat are you using this to bring up the slope?

Thank you Nick for answering to my questions. You want to know what kind of boat I am using with my winch, so my boat is Pelican Intruder 12 with a maximum weight capacity of 420 lb or 191 kg. You advise me to upgrade to another winch with features that I been asking in my original request, BUT YOU DIDN'T OFFER ME THAT TIPE / MODEL OF WINCH. For that reason, I am sorry, BUT YOU DIDN'T ANSWERED TO MY QUESTIONS. If you have the answer, please let me know A.S.A.P. Thank you in advance, Adrian M

@AdrianM I wanted to get an idea of how much weight you were pulling before I made a recommendation. There is an electric winch part # BDW15017 that will give you the free spooling line and allow you to extend it freely, as well as it being an electric motor and require no cranking of the hand winch. If you wanted to stick with a similar but upgraded one the Dutton-Lainson # DL14881 is going to be a 2 speed winch instead of the single speed you have. This means there is a setting for easier retracting at a higher gear speed that wont require as much cranking. It also has a lever that you can push in order to let the line run out freely. I attached some breakdown videos for you to take a look at.
