Question:

Will the Furrion Chill Cube RV Air Conditioner 18,000 BTU ducted fit my 2017 25’ Airstream FC? Would I need to buy an installation kit of some sort? Thanks

For your 2017 Airstream with a ducted system, you’ll want the Furrion Chill Cube RV Air Conditioner with Air Distribution Box - Ducted - 18,000 Btu - Black # FR39TD. This setup includes everything you need to get up and running.

Just a heads-up: with the transition to R32 refrigerant this year, the AC systems were redesigned as well. While the refrigerant itself stays sealed inside the rooftop unit, the newer R32 models use different controls, electronics, and ceiling assemblies than the older R410A systems, so the older components will not work with the newer units.

Thank you, this unit is also available in white, correct? Forgive, but when you say the R32 needs a whole new set-up, this is all included with the new unit, correct? Thank you for your time!

@HartP Yes, everything you need is included. You cannot mix the old air distribution boxes with the new R32 refrigerant. You will be getting a new AC, Air distribution box, remote thermostat (I really like the follow me feature), and the hardware as well. What does the refrigerant type have to do with the distribution box? And don’t just say they are not compatible because the refrigerant is in the unit, not something that leaves the unit.

@Mcbrian Great question, because you would think you would just need to replace the air conditioner itself since the refrigerant never actually leaves the rooftop unit. The refrigerant stays sealed inside the AC, so at first it really does not make sense why the distribution box or ceiling assembly would matter. What’s actually happening is that when manufacturers switch refrigerant types, like going from R410A to R32, they usually redesign the entire AC platform at the same time. So the incompatibility is not because the refrigerant is somehow traveling into the distribution box. It is because the newer rooftop unit uses different electronics, controls, communication systems, sensors, and airflow design than the older system. The rooftop unit contains the compressor, coils, refrigerant, control board, and fan system. The distribution box ties into all of that through the wiring, thermostat communication, fan controls, sensors, and airflow routing. Once those systems change, the older distribution box will not properly communicate or operate with the newer rooftop unit. So when a manufacturer says an R32 unit requires a different distribution box, they are not saying the refrigerant itself is the problem. The refrigerant type is really just the easiest way to identify which generation of AC system you are working with, and the older generation components will not work correctly with the newer generation rooftop unit.
