Can You Control the Touch Switch Reading Light with a Rocker Switch to Turn On and Off the Light?

Updated 09/13/2025 | Published 05/18/2025

Question:

Regarding reading light Part Number: CE46FR. I want to be able to add a separate switch that is in a different location than the light itself, as our nightstands are deep and my wife can’t reach back to the headboard area from the side of the bed. Since this particular light seems to have a “touch” switch, I am wondering if adding a second switch to the circuit will work. Will the switch on the light base stay in the “on” position even when power to the light is switched off by the second switch I will be adding. Thanks.

Hello Jim,

Great question. You could add a switch like the Single Rocker Switch - On/Off - Black # 37212225 to the 12V RV LED Reading Light - 6-1/8" Tall - Satin Nickel # CE46FR to help turn the light off, but since the light is a "touch" switch, she would need to physically touch the light for it to come back on, the switch will only work to turn the light off.

You could add the rocker switch # 37212225 to the Gustafson 12V RV LED Reading Light - 5" Tall - Satin Nickel # 277-000490 so that she could control the light at arms reach to both turn on, and off the light.

What kind of camper do you have? Any big trips planned for the year?

Hey Jim, Did you decide to go with the rocker switch for your reading light? I'm curious to know if it worked out for you and your wife, as it could help others looking for a similar solution.

@KateF Well, we decided to get a new, larger trailer. ?? Not because of the reading lights, though.

@JimC Very exciting Jim!! What did you end up going with? That would be quite the story if it was really because of the reading light LOL

@KateF We have an Outdoors RV 280 KVS Titanium series. Previous trailer was an Outdoors RV 25 RDS Mountain series.
